SECURITY ALERT

We’d like to advise the entire community that using modified versions of VRChat obtained outside of our official distribution platforms may be installing malware on your computer. Secure locations to download VRChat are via our Steam page and our website. Also, as a reminder, users found using altered versions of the client will be permanently banned from our service. If you know of users using one of these clients, you may want to warn them of the risks.

Please be patient with us (and our response times!) while we continue to work hard on major updates to provide increased security, more reliable servers and an overall improved VRChat. A patch went out this week and we’ll have another one out shortly.

Bringing to life your Oculus Medium creations in VRChat

Bringing to life your Oculus Medium creations in VRChat

A different breed of avatar has begun appearing in VRChat, thanks to Oculus Medium. In this sculpting tool for the Oculus Rift, users can create inside VR with Oculus Touch controllers. Not long after Oculus Medium’s release, our community started experimenting with ways they might be able to bring their creations to life in VRChat.

Cubed Paradox was one of the first to figure out how to bring an avatar from Oculus Medium to VRChat, inspiring countless others to bring their own Medium creations in. In his video tutorial above, he walks you through the process of building the avatar in Medium to bringing it to life in VRChat.

VRChat Releases Early Access Build

Hey there! First an introduction and some important information…

Since its inception almost three years ago, VRChat has transformed from a passion project to a full Social VR experience. Early this year we began to grow our team and we’ve been working extremely hard toward a version that will be launching soon on Viveport, Steam & Oculus stores.

As our community is the foundation of who we are, we decided to release an “Early Access Build” to that group for testing and feedback. That’s gone well and we now want to go a little wider which is one of the reasons we’re posting this information. We’d also like to provide more context and information associated with this release.

Bowling, Art Studio, and new Interaction

The interaction system in VRChat has been completely revamped. Both Oculus and Vive users will find new and improved ways of interacting with the world around them.

Using the Xbox controller, Rift users can now pickup, equip, throw, and manipulate objects. They can do everything Vive users can!

Vive interaction has been tweaked to feel a lot better. Pickup and equip are two different actions and physics feel great too!

Best of all, any interactable item in a world will be highlighted for easy visibility. If it highlights, you can do something with it!

Introducing “Holoport” Locomotion

Introducing “Holoport” Locomotion

One of the biggest challenges in VR is locomotion. How do we navigate around a large virtual space without feeling sick?

A widely used solution is teleport, allowing a user to instantly move from point A to B. Teleport removes sim sickness from the equation but makes multiplayer experiences a little more challenging, in that these experiences need to be designed around the teleport mechanic. In addition, users will see other players popping around the environment, making player interaction nearly impossible while locomoting. Various tweaks make multiplayer + teleport a viable option (a time delay between teleports, a trail to show where a player has traveled, a ghost of where the player is going to teleport to), but the gameplay will still need to be designed around this mechanic.

Japan and the beginning of the HTC Vive rooms

Japan and the beginning of the HTC Vive rooms

It’s been a busy month at VRChat. With the release of the HTC Vive, community members have been hard at work creating spaces that utilize the unique features of the Vive. We also just got back from a trip to Japan, where we showed off our new demo with a sneak peak of what’s to come in VRChat.

Following an investment by GREE VR Capital, LLC, VRChat was invited to Japan to attend their conference. Attendees waited hours to get a peak at the future of social VR. The demo took place in 3 locations: a kitchen, a Victorian library, and the moon. Guests scarfed down a cornucopia of food, tried their hands at gun-play in the library, and finished with chess and a selfie on the moon.
